Take even better care of your bike

Most bikers are passionate about their motorbike, and rightly so. There is no better feeling than having a massive piece of machinery throbbing underneath you as you hit the open road. Except most of the time that you ride it in this country you are not on the open road. Instead you are confronted with numerous hazards and are much more likely to have an accident if you are on a motorbike than if you are in a car.  The need for some sort of motorbike insurance is therefore huge for anyone with any type of motorbike, from a Harley to the most basic of mopeds.

As with owning a car, anyone owning and riding a motorbike has to be insured in order to be legally allowed to ride on the road. You only have to be insured in a third party capacity, that is to say that any damage you do to other vehicles and any basic injuries are covered. This, however, is a minimum level of coverage for motorbike insurance and you should explore all of your other options, including comprehensive insurance to cover all eventualities. This I the only cover that ill actually cover your motorbike against any damage too, whether in an accident or as a result of vandalism.

Any biker worth his or her salt does everything they can to protect their bike and that should include good motorbike insurance cover. Before going in to the basics of the policy, it may be wise to take a look at what extras various providers can give you. Some will also provide you with breakdown cover and, if you do not have a good working knowledge of your bike, this is essential. If they cannot fix your bike then they can get it home for you. This can be brought separately through other companies but if you add it on to the premium of your motorbike insurance then it will probably save you money as well as reducing the paperwork that you have.

A comprehensive motorbike insurance policy will cover you for a huge range of things that include, but are not limited to, third party injury and damage, damage to your own motorbike and riding to and from work and for leisure purposes. You can usually choose to have other things included in your policy too such as legal costs if you do have an accident and have to employ a solicitor, accessories that are added to your bike and business travel.

As with every insurance policy, there are exclusions that are hidden in the small print too. The first one that you should know about is the clause that you are not covered if you are travelling in connection with work. If, for example, you travel to appointments during your day’s work then you will not be covered when travelling between appointments. If you do this regularly then you will need to ask for business cover. You may also not be covered outside of the UK, using your bike for racing either on road or off road and if people that are not on the insurance policy are in control of the bike. These vary from policy to policy and you should always check them out before taking out the policy itself.

Motorbike insurance is offered by insurers everywhere so the best idea would be to get information about them all and compare them to see which is the best policy for you. No matter what bike you have, it is better to have a comprehensive policy that will save you from unnecessary expense further down the line than having to shell out a fortune to repair the one thing that gives you the freedom to go where you want when you want and how you want!
