Don't rely on the Government

For the last few decades, this country has experienced a huge outcry of dissatisfaction against the National Health Service. You wonder what you pay your taxes for these days with huge waiting lists, super bugs and beds in corridors of hospitals full of patients all providing examples of how the system is failing us. The NHS is probably on its last legs and has been for some time. People have lost faith in it and are starting to opt into private health care. However, private health care can be extremely expansive in comparison to the virtually free NHS.

Not only do you have to pay for prescriptions when opting into private health care, you also have to pay for appointments, consultations, surgery and all manner of other elements that are essential to getting good health care. When you take into account how much each element actually costs, the bills soon mount up. Not only are you paying for better health care, you may have to get into debt as a result, especially if you or a member of your family has a long term illness like cancer that requires ongoing treatment.

In certain cases, the waiting lists for consultation and surgery in the NHS are triple that of private health care and some patients cannot wait as long as it would take to see someone. Private health care may be the only option. As private health care companies know that the average person cannot afford to pay for health care, they have now began to offer health insurance. For a monthly premium, you can have peace of mind that if either you or any member of your family does fall ill then you can afford the best care and treatment offered in this country.

It can be difficult to choose a level of health insurance cover because of the sheer amount of policies on offer. However, you should always choose to cover your entire household. You can purchase single policies but joint and multiple health insurance policies are often better value and will give you extensive peace of mind rather so you do not have to worry continuously about your loved ones’ health.

The very basic of health insurance policies cover hospital charges for in-patient and day-patient treatments as well as therapy and treatment related to both. They do not cover long-term illnesses and related treatments, tests made to diagnose and illness or surgery. There are policies that do cover these types of treatment though so you just have to find the right policy for you with the level of cover you want.

Pre-existing conditions are not covered on most health insurance policies because they would be paying out more than your premiums would cover for the first few months. With some health insurance policies, there are exclusion periods. Most state that you are not eligible to claim for the first thirty days or so of the policy just to make sure that no pre-existing conditions exist. Very few people would be happy to wait that long to be seen! It also gives you the right to cancel during that period of time if you find the policy does not suit you.

Health insurance gives individuals another option for health care. Most people can afford to spare a little bit of money each month but they cannot afford to pay huge medical bills in one go. They only other alternative is the NHS. If you do not find that option very appealing then health insurance would definitely be appropriate for you. Comparing providers would find you the best cover for the best price so take a look around to help you decide whether you can really afford to do without it!
